Extremely well researched。 Through Maddow is giving us a snapshot of Nazi influence in the US from 1930-1946, it is a cautionary lesson of how close we came to falling into Facism and how close we remain to falling into the grip of facism to this day。

Chuck Wallace

Ms。 Maddow is a great historian who makes her work factual and enjoyable。

AstoundingAn engaging and frightening expose of the Nazi infiltration of America leading up to and during WWII。 This book should be a must read for every American history class。

Anne

Excellent & insightful history of Nazi enthusiasts pre & during WWII。。 quite frightening。 Impressed with attempts of the DOJ prosecutor who tried diligently to find many guilty of treason。I wish Maddow had taken the next step and had compared these traitors to current autocrats。

Took me the full 3 weeks。 Slow in parts, disturbing in many others, scary parallels to today especially the influence we don't see or has yet to be exposed of those in Congress peddling for foreign governments。 Took me the full 3 weeks。 Slow in parts, disturbing in many others, scary parallels to today especially the influence we don't see or has yet to be exposed of those in Congress peddling for foreign governments。 。。。more

Scary but informativeRachel Maddow did an excellent job of presenting a part of history that is not learned in school。 We came very close to becoming a fascist country。 Her research is detailed and complete。 I even learned some things about my Lousianian former governor Huey P。 Long。 I did not know he was that crooked and intended to run for president。 We kind of dodged the bomb, so to speak, when we entered WWII after Pearl Harbor and Hitler was assassinated。 I can't believe that the Germans d Scary but informativeRachel Maddow did an excellent job of presenting a part of history that is not learned in school。 We came very close to becoming a fascist country。 Her research is detailed and complete。 I even learned some things about my Lousianian former governor Huey P。 Long。 I did not know he was that crooked and intended to run for president。 We kind of dodged the bomb, so to speak, when we entered WWII after Pearl Harbor and Hitler was assassinated。 I can't believe that the Germans did so much secret spy work in the U。S。 to undermine our democracy。 NOTE: This book was read in sync with Audible。com。 It was narrated by Rachel Maddow herself。 Hearing her tell this compelling history about what almost was was chilling。 。。。more

Incredibly and interesting read! Very relevant for our time。

Interesting lesson in history

Another excellent exploration of important, but buried, American history。 A must-read for anyone concerned about democracy in the U。S。 and the world。

James

A very thorough analysis of the threat of fascism to America and the world in the United States during the early 20th century。 A very complex history presented in a very well organized and readable format by Maddow。

Frank Duke

A great read detailing the rise of fascism in the United States in the 1930s and the fight against it in the 1940s。 A bit disturbing in its revelation of the members of Congress, both House and Senate, who worked against the ideals of the United States on behalf of Adolf Hitler。 Highly recommended。

As usual, Rachel Maddow presents her thesis methodically and well。 Her writing is wry, informative, and endlessly (seemingly effortlessly) entertaining as the information she presents is infuriating。

Five stars for content and three for prose and organization。 It was the shock of the demoralizing content contained in this text that kept me reading - what an eye opener。 The next time I hear someone bemoaning the current political landscape as something unique I will direct them to this title。

Rachel Maddow is a lot smarter than most of us, and I obviously do not have the schema to understand what she is telling us in this book。 It is always enchanting to listen to her speak, so I listened to quite a bit of this audiobook before I finally had to admit to myself that I was getting nothing from it。 This would probably be great for someone who is a lot more knowledgeable about history。

Detailed This book is in-depth。 Reading is slow because there is so much to absorb。 The book would be a lot harder to read without Ms。 Maddow’s dry humor。 Once it gets to the court cases, it moves faster and gets easier to read。The book is horrifying because it is so easy to see history repeating itself。

Alot of information。。Most of it very interesting, but some areas drawn out ans repetitive。

An astonishing story of the very real infiltration of Nazi spies, supporters and conspirators in the U。S。 government and society。 Henry Ford, Father Coughlin and famed architect Phillip Johnson are especially vile with their rabid anti-semitism。 America didn’t want to hear about this part of history。 It’s time this story be told when many of the same fascist and anti-Semitic issues are becoming prevalent once again。

Laura Madison Barnett

I wanted to love this book。 I’ve loved everything else she’s written。 This was really wide-ranging - obviously very well-researched - but I couldn’t attach to the story。 Obviously, there are parallels to what’s happening today politically。 Even still, I found myself refocusing on it every few minutes。

A must read for all adults in the US。 The turbulent times we are experiencing in the country have happened before。 We need to learn from history and protect our democracy。 Well done !

Jennifer

This is history we should all learn。 And time and time again, this country shows its inability to hold people in power accountable to the detriment of us all。

Bob Wiens

Excellent research。 Lovely tongue-in-cheek sarcasm at the idiocy。

I spent a lot of my time, while reading this book, muttering "How did I not know this!?" Rachel Maddow is a master storyteller of well researched history。 This is the history of the USA, in the 30s and 40s, that you may not know。 Why is that important? Because history does repeat itself。 I spent a lot of my time, while reading this book, muttering "How did I not know this!?" A brilliant book that should be read by all Americans。 We need to know and understand the history of our involvement with authoritarianism。 Authoritarian fascists attempted to destroy our democracy prior to our entrance into WWII, and they are attempting to do it again。

J

Excellent。 Well researched and the epilogue is especially satisfying。

Another brilliant book by Maddow。 This one covers the lead up to WW2 and the number of prominent Americans who were shilling for the Nazi’s。 They included American heroes, congressmen and those on Hitler’s payroll。 He wanted to keep the US out of the war at any cost。 Eventually they all were exposed and you see the striking parallels to today’s Fascist Republicans and the judicial trials of Trump。 The number of similarities really is uncanny。 We can only hope that there are enough heroes in toda Another brilliant book by Maddow。 This one covers the lead up to WW2 and the number of prominent Americans who were shilling for the Nazi’s。 They included American heroes, congressmen and those on Hitler’s payroll。 He wanted to keep the US out of the war at any cost。 Eventually they all were exposed and you see the striking parallels to today’s Fascist Republicans and the judicial trials of Trump。 The number of similarities really is uncanny。 We can only hope that there are enough heroes in today’s world to keep our democracy。 。。。more

This was fascinating。 In all of my years of studying history, I never knew--or even stopped to consider--this chapter in US history。 I wonder what happened to all those little American children who went to Nazi camps and rallies。 As a Rachel Maddow fan, I was particularly happy that the writing is very much in her voice。 I could hear the narration in my head, the inflections, as I read。 Well done and highly recommend。

Yikes! What an awful past we have in this country! Unfortunately it only served to inform us about what continues to this day and seems to be advancing it's ugly head in current events。 Keep your eyes open folks! Yikes! Like her podcast, this book is well-researched and well-written。 It's so eye-opening to learn that such a significant component of history was left to the dark corners where only rabid history buffs pay attention。 I suppose it was easy to replace it with the easier-to-digest version that we were the good guys who defeated the Nazis。 We are doing a disservice to future generations by leaving out inconvenient, unflattering aspects of our history。 I don't know if I should feel comforted that we sur Like her podcast, this book is well-researched and well-written。 It's so eye-opening to learn that such a significant component of history was left to the dark corners where only rabid history buffs pay attention。 I suppose it was easy to replace it with the easier-to-digest version that we were the good guys who defeated the Nazis。 We are doing a disservice to future generations by leaving out inconvenient, unflattering aspects of our history。 I don't know if I should feel comforted that we survived this rise in fascism/authoritarianism/nationalism (pick your "ism") before or terrified that it never goes away。 。。。more
